Repair or Buy New? How to Decide What's Worth It

An honest guide from your local repair shop. Sometimes we'll tell you a repair isn't worth it.

When your phone breaks, the instinct for many people is to start browsing for a new one. But in the majority of cases, a repair is the smarter financial choice. At Tech Fix and Trade we're a repair shop, but we'll always give you an honest answer if we think a repair isn't worth it for your situation.

Here's a straightforward guide to help you decide.

When Repairing Is Almost Always Worth It

These are the repairs where the maths are clearly in favour of fixing over replacing:

  • Cracked screen: Screen repairs typically cost £50 to £150 depending on the model. A new phone costs £400 to £1,200. Unless the phone is very old or has multiple other faults, repair wins.
  • Battery replacement: Usually £35 to £75. Makes a slow or short-lasting phone feel new again. Almost always worth doing.
  • Charging port repair: Typically £40 to £70. If your phone won't charge and everything else is working, this is an easy decision.
  • Broken back glass: Cosmetic but can be fixed for less than £60 on most models. Much cheaper than a new phone.
  • Speaker or microphone fault: Component-level repairs that are usually well under £60.

When It Might Be Time to Consider Upgrading

There are situations where buying new (or buying a quality used device) makes more sense:

  • The phone is 5 or more years old and no longer receives software updates: An outdated operating system is a genuine security risk. If your phone can't receive security patches, that's a real concern.
  • Multiple things are broken at once: If the screen is cracked, the battery is failing and the charging port is damaged, the combined repair cost may approach the price of a decent used replacement.
  • The phone has motherboard damage: Water damage or a severe drop that affects the logic board can be difficult and expensive to repair, sometimes more than the phone's value.
  • The repair cost exceeds 50% of the phone's current value: As a general rule, if a repair costs more than half what the phone is worth, it's worth considering whether a replacement makes more sense.

The Hidden Cost of Buying New

When people compare repair cost to new phone cost, they often think about the contract or upfront price. But there are real costs that don't always get factored in:

  • Setting up a new phone takes time, including transferring data, reinstalling apps and reconfiguring settings
  • You lose familiarity with your device and often discover features you actually liked about the old one
  • New phone contracts lock you in for 24 months, meaning the actual cost is much higher than it appears
  • Your old device ends up in a drawer or as landfill

What About Buying a Good Used Phone Instead?

If your phone genuinely is beyond economic repair, a quality used or refurbished device is often a much better option than a brand new contract. You get a phone that's one or two generations old for a fraction of the new price, often in excellent condition.

At Tech Fix and Trade we also buy, sell and trade devices. If you're looking for a good used handset, come in and we'll show you what we have available and give you honest advice on what represents good value.
