Galaxy Z Fold Inner Screen Repair

The big folding display is the most expensive part of a Fold and the one people most often misread. Here's what each symptom usually points to.

A black or coloured line down the fold

The classic Fold fault. It can be the display panel itself or the flexible connection underneath. Both look the same from the outside, so it has to be inspected before anyone can say which.

One half black, the other half working

Usually a damaged panel or a failed connection to that side. If the cover screen still works, the phone itself is running and your data is likely still there.

Flicker or colour shift when you open it

Often appears at certain angles only. Tell us which angle: it helps us find the cause faster.

Black patches spreading from a point

Typically impact damage under the surface. It tends to grow, so the sooner it's looked at the better.

Touch dead in one area

Can be the panel, the protector or software. We test touch across the whole screen before quoting.

A mark or dent right on the crease

Could be the protector or the panel. See the next section before assuming the worst.

Each Fold has its own inner screen. The Fold7's main display is 8.0" against 7.6" on the Fold5 and Fold6, and we order the exact part for your model number. Never press the inner screen with a pen or fingernail: Samsung's own care guide warns sharp objects can damage it. On a Fold7 that matters more, because it doesn't support the S Pen at all (Samsung removed that layer to make it thinner). If a pen does nothing on a Fold7, that's normal, not a fault.

Is it the screen, or just the protector?

Every Fold comes with a protective film already fitted to the inner screen. Samsung calls it an official part of the foldable and recommends leaving it on. When it lifts, bubbles or creases, people often think the display is broken.

Usually the protector

  • A bubble or lifted edge you can see
  • A line in the film that the picture doesn't follow
  • The image underneath looks normal
  • Touch still works under the bubble

Usually the display

  • Black areas, lines or colours in the picture itself
  • Flicker or parts of the screen that don't light up
  • Touch not working in a zone
  • It happened after a drop or pressure

Don't peel it off yourself. Samsung warns that removing the film can lead to touch problems or screen damage, and says to have it replaced by a service centre. A lifting protector does not automatically mean the screen needs replacing. Bring it in and we'll tell you which one it is.

Galaxy Z Fold Outer Screen Repair

The cover screen is the one on the front, the one you use with the phone closed. It's a completely separate display from the inner folding screen, with its own part and its own price. A cracked cover screen doesn't mean the inner screen is affected, and the other way round.

  • Cracked glass, picture fine: the most common cover screen job.
  • Black cover screen, inner screen working: points to the cover display or its connection.
  • Lines, flicker or touch not responding: tested before we quote.

The cover screen grew with each model: 6.2" on the Fold5, 6.3" on the Fold6 and 6.5" on the wider Fold7, so the parts are specific to each one.

Galaxy Z Fold Hinge Problems

Why won't my Galaxy Z Fold open fully? Sometimes it's the hinge, often it isn't only the hinge. That's why we assess before we quote.

Won't open flat or stops shortDebris in the hinge, a bent frame after a drop or hinge wear.
Stiff, or unusual resistanceGrit or dirt in the mechanism is common.
Grinding or clickingParticles inside, or a damaged part. Stop folding it repeatedly to test.
Uneven fold, one side lowerOften a bent mid frame rather than the hinge itself.
Visible damage after a dropCheck the inner screen too: hinge impacts can reach the display.

Never force it open or closed. On a Fold, the inner screen bends with the hinge. Forcing a stuck hinge is one of the quickest ways to turn a hinge problem into an inner screen replacement.

Dust ratings, and why sand matters

The Fold5 is rated IPX8: protected against water, with no dust rating at all. The Fold6 and Fold7 are IP48, where the 4 means protection from solid particles larger than 1mm, not fine dust or sand. Samsung's own guidance says small particles like sand may damage the device, and it doesn't advise taking a Fold to the beach or pool.

Each generation changed the hinge: the Fold5 introduced Samsung's Flex Hinge, the Fold6 added a strengthened folding edge, and the Fold7 uses a thinner Armor FlexHinge.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Battery Problems

All three models use a 4,400mAh battery made of two cells, one in each half of the phone. That's different to a normal phone, so a Fold battery job isn't a like for like swap. We check battery health and what's actually draining it before suggesting a replacement.

  • Drains fast or shuts down at 20 to 30%: a worn battery is likely, but apps and charging faults cause the same symptom.
  • Poor battery life after an update: often settles within a few days. If it doesn't, bring it in.
  • Gets hot while charging: stop charging and get it checked.
Swelling? Stop using it. If a gap appears between the screens, the back glass lifts or the phone won't close properly, the battery may be swelling. Stop using and charging it, and bring it in for assessment. Don't press it back together.

Galaxy Z Fold Not Charging?

All three charge at up to 25W wired. Before assuming the port is broken, try this:

  1. Another cable and plug. Cables fail far more often than ports.
  2. Look into the port with a torch. Pocket lint packs in and stops the cable seating. Don't dig at it with metal.
  3. Try wireless. If wireless charging works but the cable doesn't, the port is the likely cause. If neither works, it's more likely the battery or the board.

Charging slowly, only at an angle or the cable not being recognised are all things we test. The cause can be the cable, charger, port, battery or the charging circuit, and we tell you which before quoting.

Camera, Audio and Other Fold Faults

Camera

Blurry, black or shaking pictures. A cracked lens cover and a failed camera module are different jobs, so we check which. The Fold7's main camera is 200MP; the Fold5 and Fold6 use 50MP, and the parts differ.

Speaker and microphone

People can't hear you, or calls sound muffled. Blocked grilles are common, so we clean and test before replacing anything.

Liquid damage

A water rating isn't a promise. Samsung rates the Folds for fresh water up to 1.5m for 30 minutes, not sea water or pools. If yours got wet, switch it off, don't charge it, and bring it in as soon as you can.

Won't turn on

Charge it for 30 minutes on a charger you know works. If it's still dead, it could be the battery, charging circuit or board. Diagnosis comes first, and with no fix, no fee you don't pay for a repair that doesn't work.

After any repair that opens the phone, we can't promise the original water resistance rating is restored.

Galaxy Z Fold Repair Questions

Can a Galaxy Z Fold inner screen be repaired?

Yes. At Tech Fix and Trade in Ruislip an inner folding screen replacement is £529 on a Fold5, £569 on a Fold6 and £629 on a Fold7. Because a lifting protector or a connection fault can look like a broken screen, we inspect the phone before confirming the quote.

Why is there a black line down my Fold screen?

A line along the fold usually means damage to the inner display panel or the flexible connection beneath it. Both look identical from the outside, so the phone needs inspecting to tell which part has failed.

Is my Fold screen broken, or is it the protector?

If the picture underneath looks normal and touch still works, it's often the factory fitted protector lifting or bubbling. Lines, black areas or dead touch zones point to the display. Don't peel the protector off: Samsung warns it can cause touch problems or screen damage.

Can a Galaxy Z Fold7 outer screen be repaired?

Yes. The cover screen is a separate part from the inner folding screen, so it's a separate repair: £179 on a Fold7, £159 on a Fold6 and £149 on a Fold5.

Can a Samsung Fold hinge be repaired?

We assess hinge problems first, because a fold that's stiff or won't open fully can be caused by debris, a bent frame or the hinge itself. Don't force it: the inner screen bends with the hinge and can be damaged.

How do I know which Galaxy Z Fold I have?

Open Settings, then About phone. The model name and number are at the top: SM-F946 is a Fold5, SM-F956 a Fold6 and SM-F966 a Fold7. The Fold7 is also much thinner, at 8.9mm closed.

Can a Fold be repaired after liquid damage?

Sometimes. Switch it off, don't charge it and bring it in quickly, because corrosion spreads. The Folds are rated for fresh water only, up to 1.5m for 30 minutes, and we can't promise water resistance after a repair.

Is a damaged Galaxy Z Fold worth repairing?

It depends on the model, the fault and the rest of the phone. A newer Fold in good condition with one fault is usually worth a quote. If it has several faults, compare the repair quote with what we'd pay for it as it is.
